Itinerary

  • We pick you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakesh and depart at 8am to travel into and across the High Atlas Mountains. After a spectacular drive on the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, we take a side road to the Telouet Kasbah, a superb example of Moorish architecture, which belonged to the Lords of the Atlas, the Glaoui family, and which now stands in ruins after the last Pasha fled the country following the departure of the French from The Kingdom of Morocco. From there we continue on to lunch at Ait Ben Haddou. This is the most famous Kasbah in Morocco and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Many films have been shot in Ait Ben Haddou including Gladiator, Prince of Persia and parts of the series Game of Thrones.

After our visit to the Kasbah we travel onto Fint to spend the night in a traditional guesthouse in a secluded Berber oasis, where some of the Game of Thrones was shot!

  • The road continues through the Skoura Oasis, full of crumbling Kasbahs, we visit the stunning Kasbah Amridil. From here we travel through Kela’a M’gouna, the Valley of Roses, where the roses are distilled to produce oils, lotions and creams found on sale throughout the country. An off-road route leads through geologically fascinating landscape and local villages. Have tea in the valley with Berber nomads tending their goats and living in caves! From there the next place to visit is the Dades Valley with its green gardens along the river and amazing rock formations where we stop for lunch and the afternoon of either relaxing or walking along the river valley. You will spend the night in a Berber guesthouse.

  • After breakfast, there is time to walk by the river before continuing to the next gorge Todra where we will stop for lunch and some sight seeing. We then continue on to our bivouac at the Erg Chebbi dunes via the Ziz Valley, and the town of Erfoud. Here we stop to see the remains of 4 different types of dinosaurs and visit the fossil artifacts workshops. In the afternoon we reach our bivouac and after a welcoming glass of tea, you can take a two-hour camel ride in the Sahara. The sunset from the top of the dunes (250m) is spectacular and afterwards there is dinner and the night in a nomad tent at the foot of the dunes.

  • After breakfast, you will have a days camel trekking tour into the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi. You will have an option of either riding or walking. Your camel guides will prepare and cook your lunch out in the dunes. After lunch is the return trek to the bivouac for dinner and the night.

  • Early birds can watch the spectacle of the majestic sunrise where the colour of the dunes and the play of shadows are an awesome sight. After breakfast we drive back east towards the Dra’a Valley via the villages of Tazzarine (featured in the film ‘Babel’) and stopping at N’Kob for lunch. We then drive to Tanasikht, along the track of the ancient caravan route, reaching the Dra’a valley, full of large palm trees and ancient Kasbahs. We continue on until we reach Agdz and spend the night in a riad or hotel.

  • This morning we visit Kasbah Tamnougalt, the oldest and most famous Kasbah in the Dra’a Valley. Part of the Kasbah is still occupied by a few families, living much as they have done for centuries. Over the mountain pass of Tizi-n-Tinfifte (1660m), also featured in one of the most dramatic and crucial scenes of “Babel”, we reach Ouarzazate to visit the Kasbah of Taourirt. Opposite it is another museum full of Hollywood film sets awaiting you. The trip ends in Marrakesh after re-crossing the High Atlas and Tichka pass, overlooking the mud-brick Berber villages.
